Can I Use a Dresser as a Nightstand? Yes

por Admin en Aug 27, 2026
Can I Use a Dresser as a Nightstand? Yes

A standard nightstand can feel too small when you are trying to keep a bedroom calm, functional, and free of clutter. If you need more room for extra blankets, charging cords, books, medications, or everyday essentials, you may be asking, can I use a dresser as a nightstand? Absolutely. A dresser can make a smart, stylish bedside solution when its scale works with your bed and the room has enough floor space.

The best choice is not always the piece labeled "nightstand." It is the piece that gives you the storage, surface space, and look you want for a bedroom that feels like home.

When a dresser works as a nightstand

Using a dresser beside the bed works especially well in larger bedrooms, primary suites, guest rooms, and apartments where every piece of furniture needs to earn its place. A small chest of drawers can replace one nightstand, while a longer low dresser can sit along one side of the bed if you prefer a more dramatic, built-in look.

The biggest benefit is storage. Most nightstands offer one or two small drawers at most. A dresser gives you space to put away items that often end up on the floor or piled on top of furniture. You can keep sleepwear, extra sheets, seasonal clothing, reading materials, and personal items close by without turning your bedside into a catch-all.

A dresser also gives you a larger top surface. That is useful if you like a substantial lamp, a framed photo, a water carafe, a small plant, or a charging station. For families sharing a room or anyone who wants a more organized bedtime routine, that extra space can be a real upgrade.

There is a style advantage, too. Matching bedroom furniture creates a pulled-together appearance, but matching is not your only option. A warm wood dresser beside an upholstered bed can make a room feel relaxed and layered. A clean-lined white or black chest can bring structure to a colorful bedroom. The goal is for the pieces to look intentional, not necessarily identical.

Can I use a dresser as a nightstand if it is taller?

Yes, but height is the first measurement to check. Ideally, the top of your bedside dresser should sit around the same height as your mattress, or within a few inches above or below it. This makes it easy to reach a lamp, your phone, or a glass of water while you are in bed.

A dresser that is much taller than the mattress can feel awkward and may block the visual openness around the bed. It can also make a bedside lamp sit uncomfortably high. On the other hand, a low dresser may be difficult to reach and can look undersized next to a tall bed frame and mattress.

Before you buy, measure from the floor to the top of your mattress. Then compare that number with the dresser height. Do not forget that thick mattresses, foundations, and adjustable bases can add more height than expected.

Width and depth matter just as much. You should be able to walk comfortably between the dresser and the wall, closet, or bedroom door. In a tighter room, a narrow chest with drawers is often a better choice than a wide six-drawer dresser. Look for a piece deep enough to hold bedside essentials without extending so far into the walkway that it becomes a daily annoyance.

Choose the right dresser shape for your room

Not every dresser has to become a bedside dresser in the same way. The room layout should lead the decision.

A narrow vertical chest is often the easiest swap. It takes up a smaller footprint while giving you several drawers of useful storage. This option works well beside a queen or king bed, especially when the room has limited wall space.

A short, wide dresser can work beautifully in a spacious primary bedroom. It creates a generous surface for lamps and decor, but it needs breathing room. If the piece crowds the side of the bed or forces you to squeeze around it, it is too large for that spot.

A makeup vanity or small accent cabinet can also bridge the gap between a traditional nightstand and a full dresser. These pieces can bring storage and personality to the bedside without overwhelming the room. If you are furnishing from scratch, choosing pieces from the same color family or with similar hardware can help the space feel coordinated.

For a symmetrical setup, use two matching smaller dressers, one on each side of the bed. This can look polished in a large room and gives both sleepers equal storage. For a more casual, collected look, use a dresser on one side and a standard nightstand on the other. Just balance the arrangement with lamps that are similar in height and visual weight.

Make the bedside dresser feel intentional

Once the dresser is in place, a few practical details will make it work better as a nightstand. Start by keeping the top useful, not overloaded. A lamp, charging tray, and one or two personal items are usually enough. The larger surface can invite clutter, so give every item a reason to be there.

Think about cords before you settle on a placement. If you charge your phone or use a bedside lamp, make sure the dresser is close enough to an outlet. A cord organizer, charging dock, or lamp with built-in USB ports can keep the surface cleaner and prevent wires from becoming a tangle behind the furniture.

Use the top drawer for what you reach for at night. Glasses, lip balm, a book, headphones, and a sleep mask are easier to find when they have a dedicated spot. Deeper drawers can hold extra linens, blankets, or off-season clothes. This is where a dresser can make a bedroom feel more restful: the things you need are nearby, but they are not out in the open.

Lighting deserves attention as well. Because a dresser may be wider or taller than a nightstand, a small lamp can look lost on top of it. Choose a lamp that has enough height and presence for the scale of the furniture, while keeping the bottom of the shade near eye level when you are sitting up in bed. If tabletop lighting is not the right fit, wall sconces can free up the entire dresser surface.

When a dresser is not the best bedside choice

A dresser is not automatically better than a nightstand. In a small bedroom, a large piece may make the room feel cramped and disrupt the path around the bed. If you only need space for a lamp, phone, and book, a compact nightstand may give you the cleaner look you want.

It may also be the wrong choice if the drawers cannot open fully because of the bed, a rug, or another piece of furniture. Measure the drawer clearance, not just the dresser itself. A beautiful storage piece is frustrating if you cannot use it.

Consider safety, especially in homes with children. Tall dressers should be properly secured to the wall to reduce tip-over risk. Avoid placing heavy decor where it could be pulled down, and make sure the furniture is level before loading drawers. A dresser used beside the bed should be just as stable as one placed against a wall.

Finally, watch the balance of the room. A substantial dresser on one side of a bed can look great, but it can also make a small bed appear off-center or undersized. If the arrangement feels heavy, balance it with a larger lamp, wall art, a bench at the foot of the bed, or a more substantial piece on the opposite side.

Build a bedroom that works harder for you

Furniture should fit your life, not force you into one layout. If a dresser gives you the bedside storage you have been missing, it is a practical choice that can make your room look more complete. Measure your space, choose a height that is comfortable from bed, and leave enough room to move around easily.

At The Room Store, you can find bedroom furniture that helps you create the look you want and deserve, whether you are refreshing one side of the bed or furnishing the whole room. The right bedside piece should make your evenings easier, your mornings less rushed, and your bedroom a more comfortable place to recharge.
